Will The Tax Deadline Be Extended Again?
With no end to the virus in sight, many are concerned about whether or not they will be able to file their taxes on time. As of now, the IRS has not indicated that it will postpone the tax-filing deadline for the third year in a row.
Taxpayers should be aware that the rules changes going into effect in 2022 and potentially complicating factors, like this year’s expanded child tax credit payments and repayment of deferred Social Security taxes. We recommend filing as early as possible to avoid any potential delays.
What If I Miss a Tax Deadline?
If you miss a tax deadline, the IRS could levy civil penalties and interest charges. These amounts vary depending on how late your payment is and if you have a history of delinquencies.
Make sure to file for an extension with the IRS as soon as possible if you can’t meet your filing requirements by the due date. The penalty may not be as much as you expect, although it still needs to be paid in full. Even though asking for an extension isn’t fun, it beats having to pay additional fees.
